Several senators on Wednesday wished President Rodrigo Duterte good health after he mentioned about his Barrett’s esophagus, which he said he was told is nearing stage one cancer, during a recent televised address.
“We wish the President good health because the country needs him to be in good shape to face the challenges brought by COVID-19,” Senator Sonny Angara said in a message.
Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto and Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa said the 75-year-old Duterte should take care of his health.
Meanwhile, Senate President Vicente Sotto III said it’s “not unusual” for Duterte to have such medical conditions at his age.
“I’m sure he will be taken cared of properly, knowing the medical background of Honeylet,” he added, referring to Duterte’s common-law wife who is a nurse.
In a taped briefing aired Tuesday, Duterte said his doctor has advised him to stop drinking because his Barrett’s esophagus may develop into stage one cancer.
Barrett’s esophagus is a condition in which the lining of the esophagus is replaced by tissues similar to the lining of the intestine.
Malacañang, meanwhile, said Duterte was talking about “a medical advice that happened many years ago, even prior to the presidency.”
Duterte is “fit and healthy for a person his age,” according to his spokesperson Harry Roque. —KBK, GMA News
