People also are encouraged to get the flu vaccine to help limit the spread of respiratory illnesses, lower the need for medical visits and hospitalizations, and reduce strain on the health care system, officials said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the flu vaccine for everyone 6 months or older, and especially those at high risk for influenza complications, including infants, young children, pregnant women, adults 65 and older and those with underlying medical conditions.
